Start with the end result in mind.
Your session will be customized to create art that fits perfectly into your home and lifestyle. Having an idea of how you might like to display your images will influence how I shoot the session. So , for example, if you know you want to enjoy your images in a beautiful heirloom photo book, I will make sure I get a good variety of images such as action shots, detail shots ( paws, tails, etc.), images of you with your pup, candid and posed shots. If you think you really want a really lovely wall art piece or a collection of wall art ,I will focus on getting the perfect backdrop and image for a wall art piece. If you have a skinny wall that you are hoping to fill with wall art, I will create images in portrait orientation to fit that wall. If you don’t know what you want, that is fine too. I can show you a variety of products prior to our session to give you an idea of options. Also if you would like your wall art piece to go nicely with specific colours in your living-room for example, we could do your pet photography session in winter if your colours are cool. Alternatively, if your home is filled with deep warm tones , you might like to have your pup photographed in the Fall with all the gorgeous colours of that season.

The Session
Now this is the time for the best part. The session is strictly a stress-free time. We will let your pup lead the way and take plenty of breaks as we explore the area we are shooting in. Don’t be concerned if your dog doesn’t want to sit or if he is more interested in all the exciting sights and sounds around us. I promise even if it feels like they aren’t listening or we have to set up the shot numerous times it is fine. It’s expected and I promise that we are creating incredible images. If your pup doesn’t have a solid sit or stay, not to worry, we can do a mini training session on location. It works even better if your dog is motivated by either treats, a ball, a person, etc. It’s helpful to know what motivates your dog and then work with that.
And the most important thing to remember -Have a great time , don’t stress! If you are having fun so too will your dog! And that’s what we want.

Preparing for your session
Please exercise your dog prior to the session if possible. It’s exciting to be in a new place but this helps get down to business faster.
Treats– I always have high value treats, but if your dog is picky or has dietary restrictions please bring some treats too. Tiny pieces work best. Think dime-sized pieces for large dogs and pea-sized for small dogs.
Toys– if your dog has a favourite toy(s) please bring it with you.
Collar– If possible, bring a regular flat basic collar for his portraits as well as a basic 6ft lead. If you need a harness for walking we can always change into the flat collar once we are at shooting location. I am not able to remove harnesses or gentle leaders from your dog’s final images.
The beauty parlour- If your dog has a certain “haircut” that you prefer, I recommend visiting the groomer at least a few days prior to the session. It can be very overwhelming visiting the groomer straight to our session and usually you need a little time for the new haircut to grow in. Also, for breeds that have a lot of hair surrounding the eyes it’s best to make sure your pup’s eyes are nice an visible. My camera will have a hard time focusing on those gorgeous eyes if they are hidden behind lots of hair.
Water– Bring water for everyone!
Towel– if you have a breed that does lots of drooling, bring a small towel to wipe away the drools as we photograph.
Bag– bring a bag to carry everything in.
What to wear

Please yes:
The focus of the session is on your pet , but your clothing is important too. It should be true to your style and something that you feel great in. Here is a quick list of things to do and not to do.
Yes to layers- layers add interest, no matter what the temperature. Think scarves, belts, jackets, vests, jewelry, ties, and layered shirts, Even the guys can get in on the layering action with fun tees or a thermal.
Yes to textures: Textures photograph beautifully, such as jeans or sweaters. While it is often suggested that patterns should be avoided , they can work when used in moderation.
Yes to colour: Don’t feel compelled to stick solely with neutrals. While everyone should be working from one colour palette, feel free to add a splash of colour.
Please no:
Please avoid – gym clothes, low cut tops, super short bottoms, baggy or very loose fitting clothes.
Watch these colours- Please be aware that lots of white, black, or really bright colours like hot pink/megenta or bright green do not photograph well.
Do not choose hats that create strong shadows on faces, such as baseball caps. Transition glasses can be problematic as they turn into sunglasses outside as well.
