Spring in Full Bloom: Dog Photography at the TASC Tulip Farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake

There are beautiful locations for dog photography in the Niagara Region. And then there is the TASC Tulip Farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake in the first weeks of May.

These are not the same thing.

When those tulip fields open each spring, they transform into something that genuinely takes your breath away — rows upon rows of blooms in every colour imaginable, stretching toward the horizon under wide Ontario skies. And when you place a dog you love in the middle of that — bathed in golden hour light, surrounded by waves of colour — the photographs that happen are unlike anything else I create all year.

I have had the privilege of photographing some extraordinary dogs at the TASC Tulip Farm. Majestic Saint Bernards whose size and presence make the fields feel like a painting. A cheeky Corgi whose enormous ears caught the breeze between the blooms. A stunning German Shepherd whose golden coat glowed in the late afternoon light. And a darling Pomeranian barely visible amongst the large bright tulips. Every single session has given me images that stop people in their tracks. And every single one has reminded me why I plan my entire spring calendar around this location.

If you have been thinking about booking a portrait session for your dog, this post is your sign. Spring in Niagara-on-the-Lake does not wait, and neither do the tulips.

About the TASC Tulip Farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake

The TASC Tulip Farm is one of Niagara’s most beloved spring destinations, drawing visitors from across Ontario every May to walk among thousands of tulips in bloom. Located in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake — one of the most beautiful small towns in Canada — the farm offers a landscape that shifts and transforms daily as the blooms reach their peak.

The farm typically opens in early May, and the window of peak bloom is gloriously fleeting. Depending on the weather, you may have two to three weeks of absolute perfection before the season begins to wind down. This is why I always encourage clients to book early and lock in their session date as soon as the farm announces its opening. Spring in Niagara doesn’t hold its breath for anyone.

Why Golden Hour is the Only Time to Shoot at the Tulip Farm

I will be honest with you: the TASC Tulip Farm at midday on a sunny May afternoon is beautiful to visit. But for photography? Golden hour is the only time I will book a session there, and here’s why.

When the sun is high in the sky, the light is harsh and flat. It bleaches the colour out of the tulips, creates unflattering shadows, and does nothing for your dog’s coat. The magic — and I mean real, genuine magic — happens in the hour before sunset, when the sun drops low and warm and the entire field transforms into something extraordinary.

At golden hour, the tulips seem to glow from within. The light wraps around your dog’s fur and creates that beautiful rim of warmth that makes a portrait feel alive. The colours of the blooms deepen and saturate in ways that no filter could ever replicate. And the bokeh — that gorgeous, creamy blur of out-of-focus tulips behind your sharp, beautiful dog — becomes absolutely painterly.

Some of my favourite images from the tulip farm have been Saint Bernards photographed against a sea of soft, blurred colour at golden hour, their expressions calm and regal, the light catching every strand of their magnificent coats. It is the kind of portrait that makes people gasp

What to Wear to Your Tulip Farm Session

The tulip farm gives us so much colour to work with that what you wear matters more here than almost any other location. A few guidelines to help you look and feel your best in your portraits:

  • Choose solid colours or very subtle textures — busy patterns and large logos compete with the blooms and draw the eye away from you and your dog
  • Lean into the season — soft spring tones like cream, sage green, dusty rose, warm white, soft terracotta, and pale blue all photograph beautifully against the tulips
  • Avoid colours that clash with the blooms — if the farm has a lot of red and orange tulips, wearing red may make you disappear into the background
  • Layers are your friend — a linen blazer, a light wrap, or a denim jacket adds dimension and texture to your portraits without competing with the scenery
  • Comfort is non-negotiable — we will be walking through the fields and getting down on your dog’s level, so wear shoes you can actually move in
  • Accessories are welcome — a simple hat, a delicate scarf, or a bandana on your dog can add a lovely personal touch to your session

What to Bring to Your Tulip Farm Session

A little preparation goes a long way toward making your session relaxed, fun, and full of the best moments. Here’s what I recommend bringing:

  • High value treats — something your dog goes absolutely wild for. The farm is a stimulating environment and having an irresistible treat is your secret weapon for getting those ears-up, bright-eyed expressions
  • Your dog’s favourite toy — a squeaky toy or a ball can create incredible expressions and action shots among the blooms
  • A long leash or a hands-free leash — gives your dog room to move naturally while keeping them safely with you
  • Water and a travel bowl — May can be warmer than you expect and we want your dog comfortable and happy throughout
  • A brush or comb — a quick brush before we start ensures your dog looks their absolute best in every frame
  • An extra outfit option for yourself — the light changes beautifully through the session and having a second look can give your gallery even more variety
  • Your patience and your excitement — the best sessions happen when everyone is relaxed and having fun. Your dog reads your energy, and a happy owner makes for a happy dog

The Dogs I Have Photographed at the Tulip Farm

Every dog brings something completely different to the tulip farm, and I have had the joy of photographing some truly remarkable ones there.

The Saint Bernards have been unforgettable. There is something about the sheer presence of a Saint Bernard in a tulip field — their size, their gentle expressions, their magnificent coats catching the golden light — that creates portraits that feels magical. I have photographed several of these gentle giants at the farm and every single session has delivered images that their families treasure deeply.

Eli’s, the Pomeranian, session was pure joy from start to finish. Those low-to-the-ground legs navigating the rows of tulips, those tiny ears catching the breeze, that irrepressible personality filling every frame — it was one of the most fun sessions I have ever had, and the images were absolutely charming.

The German Shepherd, Anivia at golden hour was beautiful.

Every breed tells a different story at the tulip farm. And I cannot wait to tell yours.

Book Your Spring Session Before the Blooms Are Gone

This is the part where I need you to pay attention, because I mean this genuinely: spring at the TASC Tulip Farm is one of the shortest and most spectacular windows of the entire year, and sessions fill up quickly once the farm announces its opening date.

The farm opens in late April, early May and peak bloom typically lasts only two to three weeks. I schedule golden hour sessions during that window and the spots are limited. Once they’re gone, they’re gone until next spring.

If you have a dog whose portrait you have been meaning to book — if there is a season of their life you want to capture, a bond you want to hold onto, a face you want on your wall — please don’t wait. Dogs don’t stay puppies.

They don’t stay with us as long as we wish they would. The tulips will come back next year. This exact version of your dog, at this exact moment in your life together, will not.
